NEW SATELLITE SYSTEM COULD BOOST SHIPPING NAVIGATION

Following a decision to back further development of a new global navigation satellite service it is thought thousands of new UK jobs could be created.

Introduction of the Galileo system could be worth as much as £3.8 billion to the UK in exports by 2010. Galileo will also provide greater safety in air traffic control and on the railways.

Around £630 million is to be provided by the European Commission and the European Space Agency.

The plan is for the system to be fully operational by 2008, when it will combine with other systems opening up huge opportunities for companies all over Europe.

Galileo could also boost shipping navigation and marine accident alerts; road tolling and control of urban traffic; breakdown and recovery services; and environmental studies and mapping, animal tracking and sea spillage monitoring.
