CLIFF-JUMPERS CONDEMNED BY COASTGUARDS

Coastguards have condemned a craze in which daredevils jump from cliffs around the coasts of the UK, and have launched an appeal to youngsters to stop the activity known as "tombstoning".

A spokesman says if the current trend continues it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

The condemnation follows an incident when a teenage boy was taken to Torbay hospital with lacerations after jumping at Torquay, south Devon on 24 May 2001.

A day earlier a 22-year-old man was taken to hospital after jumping 30ft into shallow water at Towan Beach, Newquay, Cornwall.

Coastguards say they are receiving several reports of kids tombstoning, and would say do not do it, it is extremely dangerous.

"Obviously jumping into water from a height is dangerous when you cannot see what is beneath or how deep the water is," said the spokesman.
