National 101/01 14 June 2001 FESTIVAL PROMOTES DIVING AND SAFE PRACTICE Try your hand at diving sessions, guided tours of Holyhead Coastguard Station, a pyrotechnic display and rescue exercise in Holyhead harbour, displays and tours at the Maritime Museum and other diving-related displays and events will all be included within a Diving Festival being organised by Holyhead Coastguard and Holyhead Maritime Museum. The Diving Festival will be held over the weekend of Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July and aims to promote safety within the diving community and to give general information about diving to the public. Jo Dilly who is the National Diving Liaison Officer for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "Recreational diving is a growing sport enjoyed by thousands of people throughout the country. HM Coastguard deals with many diving incidents throughout the year and some of these could be avoided if advice issued by the Coastguard was followed . This includes: · Tell someone somebody ashore your plans for the day, before you dive· Inform the Coastguard yourself of your intentions· Use detection aids such as marker buoys, high visibility suit, red flares and orange smoke, strobe lights or lanterns, whistles or sound generators, personal radio locator beacons, collapsible flag· Never leave your dive boat unattended· Always provide alert surface cover for divers· Do not drift dive in narrow or congested fairways· Display an ‘A flag’ for all to see· Always follow the divers code of conductNever dive when conditions are marginal or worse. |
