CONTRACT AWARDED FOR ALL-YEAR ROUND UK EMERGENCY TUGS

Minister of Shipping David Jamieson today announced the successful contractor for the provision of four all-year round emergency towing vessels (ETVs) for the UK to be managed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

This follows an earlier ministerial announcement that the UK would increase ETV cover from the current winter only provision.

Klyne Tugs wins ETV contract

The successful contractor, KLYNE TUGS (LOWESTOFT) LTD, already provides two ETVs for the MCA, mostly in the Scottish high risk areas, but has also provided a vessel this summer for the Dover Strait in concert with the French authorities.

The new contract starts from 1 October this year and is to run for eight years with an option for a further two.

Making the announcement, David Jamieson said: "Letting of this long-term contract fulfils the Government's commitment to the provision of all-year round ETV cover and demonstrates the importance we place on preventing the loss of life and protecting the marine environment. In areas of high risk these vessels will provide the first line of response to maritime accidents and the prevention of pollution."
