ENGINE FAILURE FOR COAL CARRIER

Shetland Coastguard received a call at 2:00 a.m. on 23 February 2001 from the Master of the Norwegian registered cargo vessel ‘Langesund’ who reported that the vessel had suffered engine failure 13 miles north west of the Fair Isles.

The 5060 GRT vessel, carrying 7000 metric tons of coal, is on passage from Graymercy in the USA bound for Aurdalstangen in Norway and has a crew of seven.

Within 25 minutes of the first report the vessel's Chief Engineer managed to restart the main engine and 'Langesund' got underway only to suffer engine failure for a second time at 3:10 a.m.

Shetland Coastguard tasked the Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) 'Anglian Monarch' to the scene with an expected time of arrival of 10:00 a. m., whilst 'Langesund again regained engine power and continued on her way.

Shetland Coastguard Watch Manager, Dave Phillips commented, "At no time did the 'Langesund' request assistance, however due to the fact this vessel has broken down twice in as many hours the ETV will continue to the scene as a precautionary measure at this time."

Weather on scene is northwesterly force 4 to 5; with a moderate 2 to 3 metre swell.
