OVERDUE WINDSURFER LOCATED

Belfast Coastguard were alerted to an overdue 22-year-old windsurfer in Strangford Lough after the man's mother contacted the marine emergency service at 4.45 p.m. when she became concerned for his safety.

Michael Speers, Watch Manager at Belfast Coastguard said, " The man had been reported as an hour overdue by his mother and we immediately alerted our Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bangor and Whiterock to go to the scene, and begin a shoreline search.

" In the meantime, a helicopter from RAF Prestwick was requested but was stood down when a rescue helicopter from RAF Aldergrove and a military Gazelle helicopter became available locally. The Portaferry inshore lifeboat was requested to launch to the north end of the Lough.

" A member of the Bangor team spotted from the man from the shoreline, and the Portaferry lifeboat picked him up, as he was somewhat tired after attempting to swim to the shore with his board. He has been reported as requiring no medical attention and in good health. Visibility has been moderate this afternoon, with light airs.

" In every case, we would certainly recommend - as this chap did - that a shoreside contact be told of a journey across, or on the Lough, and an approximate time of return. In this way we can alert any rescue teams required at a crucial early stage."
