ABERDEEN COASTGUARD CALLED TO CLIFF FALLER

Aberdeen Coastguard were contacted by a member of the public at noon on 20 April 2001 reporting that an elderly woman in a wheelchair had fallen from a cliff top at Skarfskerry some 10 miles west of John O' Groats in Northern Scotland.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Duncansby Head; Dunnet Head and Scrabster were immediately mobilised and a rescue helicopter R 137 from Lossiemouth was scrambled to the scene.

A Highland Ambulance Service vehicle was already on its way at the time of the call and the Northern Constabulary were also informed at the same time.

Tim Clark, Watch Officer at Aberdeen Coastguard said, "Sadly, the lady who was accompanied by her husband at the time was declared to be dead at the scene and the Duncansby team have stayed on scene to assist in recovering the body. We do not yet know how the accident occurred but the weather has been fairly calm and cold today with north westerly winds force 2 to 3.

"It is a timely and sad reminder to anyone venturing near cliffs to take the greatest of care. With the huge amount of rain that we have had over the winter some cliff edges are particularly dangerous and can be very slippery and crumbly.

"The Coastguard is responsible for overseeing the 10,500 miles of coastline throughout the UK and we have already seen some recent serious accidents with dog walkers and ramblers, as people begin to venture out to coastal paths with the present difficulties of closed footpaths across countryside areas."
