DIVER RECOVERING AFTER FAST ASCENT

Clyde Coastguard assisted a diver who is recovering at the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory hyperbaric facility after he made a fast ascent following a wreck diving expedition on 2 June 2001..

The 45-year-old male diver was in ascent after a 24-metre dive on the wreck of the 'Shuna' in the Sound of Mull, when he lost his weight belt and began a rapid ascent with no stops. When he reached the surface, the Dive Charter Vessel, 'Silver Swift' from which he had been diving recovered him and administered oxygen.

They contacted Clyde Coastguard who then tasked Oban Lifeboat that once on scene transferred him to the lifeboat and transported him to the hyperbaric facility where he receiving treatment.

Clyde Coastguard Watch Manager Davy Thompson said, "Speed is always of the essence in diving incidents such as these and the crew of the dive boat assisted this man greatly by administering oxygen and calling the Coastguard immediately.

Weather on scene was fine and sheltered with a north easterly force 4-5 wind."
