FISHING VESSEL HARD AGROUND

Shetland Coastguard was alerted at 8:30 a.m. on 14 June 2001 to the 26 metre Lerwick registered fishing vessel 'Lomur' which ran hard aground outside Scallaway on the west side of Shetland with three crew on board, she is carrying 30,000 litres of diesel.

The Coastguard scrambled Rescue Helicopter 'Oscar Charlie' to the scene and requested the launch of Aith RNLI lifeboat. The MCA's Principal Counter Pollution Officer was informed, as were Shetland Islands Council and the Shetland Salmon Farmers Association.

Two other vessels, Donvale' and 'Fear Not' were alongside, an earlier attempt to pull the vessel of the rocks failed and Agents for the vessel are now organising a larger fishing vessel to assist in a second attempt planned for the high water tide at 4:00 p.m. today.

An oil sheen spotted earlier caused fears of pollution but have since been quelled, no fuel is leaking and the oil sheen is thought to have come form one of the ropes used during the first attempt to pull
'Lomur' free.
