NORWEGIAN CREWMEN INJURED AFTER CABLE LAYING ACCIDENT

Clyde Coastguard were contacted at 11.00 am on 26 June 2001 by the vessel, ‘Havillia Skagerak’, a Norwegian registered 7172 gross tonne cable laying vessel to report an accident and request assistance.

Two Norwegian crewmen were injured in an accident that occurred 2 miles north of Loch Ryan in which one received lacerations to the thigh and the other lacerations to the arm and hand.

Coastguard’s immediately requested Stranraer Inshore Lifeboat to proceed to the casualties, aged 21 and 51, with a doctor on board.

On arrival, the doctor stabilised both casualties in preparation for transfer. The lifeboat then took them to Finnarts Bay where Stranraer Coastguard Rescue Team met them. An awaiting ambulance then took them to Garrick Hospital in Stranraer.

Dave Thompson, Clyde Coastguard Watch Manager said, "We were particularly concerned about the man with the wound to his thigh and possible blood loss. However, the operation to evacuate the crewmen to hospital went very smoothly and we understand that both men are now making a good recovery."
