RIG MAN SUFFERED STROKE

Aberdeen Coastguard scrambled rescue helicopter ‘Oscar Charlie’ to the mobile drill rig ‘Paul B Lloyd Junior’ at around 7am on 14 July 2001 after a rig worker suffered a stroke while working in the North Sea.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen Coastguard said the trip to the rig, which lies 170 miles north-east of the city, would take at least two hours.

She added: "We would like to have gone to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland but, due to his condition, he is on his way to Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"Aberdeen has got the facilities to deal with the condition that he has got," she explained.
