ALARM SPARKS MAJOR SEARCH

Forth Coastguard received an emergency 999 call from a mobile phone at 4.25p.m on 6 August 2001 from three boys who reported they had spotted someone in distress in the water off the Angus coast.

A major air and sea search swung into operation using HM Coastguard personnel from Carnoustie, RNLI lifeboats from Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, and the rescue boat from the town’s yacht club. A rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland was scrambled to join in the search.

Coastguards called off the search just before 6.30 pm after no trace of the person was found.

Carnoustie coastguards however, scoured the shoreline after the tide had receded, and also checked to see if any vehicles had been left unattended in coastal car parks in both Carnoustie and Monifieth.

The three boys Jamie Williams (12) and Darren Halley (11), both Carnoustie, and Ian Dunlop (11), from Lochgilphead, said they were convinced they had seen someone waving their arms in the water.

Lindsay Martin, station officer for HM Coastguard Carnoustie said, "We were over the area where the boys said they saw a person within about three minutes of receiving the call.

"Our boat was launched within a matter of minutes and we also searched the foreshore using our quad vehicle. We can do a search of the dunes and along the edge of the golf course very quickly using this vehicle.

"The whole operation involved a very thorough search with the lifeboats from Arbroath and Broughty Ferry, our boat, the yacht club boat, the pilot cutter and the helicopter from Boulmer.

"It is disappointing that we did not find anyone and we will now have to wait and see whether anyone is reported missing.

"The boys were convinced they saw a person in the water and they were very prompt in raising the alarm," he added.
