CAPTAIN CALAMITY FINALLY OVER EXPOSED

Shetland Coastguard was alerted by satellite phone at just before 10.00pm on 21 August 2001 to the plight of the lone yachtsman who has earned the nickname ‘Captain Calamity’.

Stuart Hill
Captain Calamity's voyage ended after his 14-foot yacht "Maximum Exposure" capsized in 20-foot high seas, 52 miles west of Shetland in a force eight gale

Stuart Hill was winched to safety by Coastguard rescue helicopter ‘Oscar Charlie’ from Sumburgh after spending an hour in the water.

Mr. Hill alerted the coastguard by satellite phone and then clung to the hull of his boat.

He was wearing a life jacket but not a survival suit and was understood to be suffering from hypothermia.

Mr. Hill was taken the Gilbert Bain Memorial Hospital in Lerwick where he is recovering from his ordeal. He is up and about and chatting with patients and staff and none the worse for his mishap.

Keith Oliver of Shetland Coastguard said this morning that he did not want to deter people from undertaking this type of venture, but that they should think long and hard about plans to contact the emergency services in event of an incident.
