Scotland & NI 184/01 24 August 2001 MAN TIED HIMSELF TO CAPSIZED BOAT Clyde Coastguard was contacted on 22 August 2001 by a Danish cargo vessel that reported spotting a man tied to his capsized vessel. The man from the Isle of Bute was spotted in the Firth of Clyde between Little Cumbrae and Bute. Clyde Coastguard scrambled a Royal Naval rescue helicopter from Prestwick and launched a lifeboat from Largs and the Danish vessel sent out a lifeboat to help. The man was cold and fatigued after tying himself for three hours to his capsized six-metre vessel motorboat . Clyde Coastguard watch manager Calum Murray said: "This man was very lucky the cargo ship passed when it did, any later and it may have been too dark to see him. "By attaching himself to his vessel he probably saved his own life." He was taken for recovery to Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock. |
