ENGINE FIRE OFF ABERDEEN COAST

Aberdeen Coastguard began co-ordinating the response at 11:21 p.m. on 5 October 2001 to a Mayday alert received from the 88-metre offshore supply vessel 'Stirling Altair' from a position 96 miles east of Aberdeen.

The vessel suffered an engine room fire losing all power and began drifting with 12 people on board.

Three standby supply vessels alongside and the rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer were scrambled and a Nimrod aircraft from RAF Kinloss was also on scene.

The intention was for the rescue helicopter to airlift four non-essential crew off the vessel to the safety of the Ramford Banff platform. The fire was contained and all areas surrounding the engine room were sealed off.

The Master of the vessel requested a tow, which was to be arranged by the vessel owners, Stirling Shipping based in Glasgow.

Weather on scene was southerly strong force 7 winds, with 2.3 metre seas and good visibility.
