PORTLAND COASTGUARD CALLED TO MAJOR LANDSLIDE

At just before 12:00 p.m. on 27 December 2000 a major landslide was reported to be taking place at Cain’s Folly just east of Charmouth, Dorset. Lyme Regis Coastguard was tasked together with Coastguard Rescue Helicopter ‘Whiskey Bravo’ which was diverted from training. Dorset County Council, West Dorset County Council Emergency Planning Officer (EPO), National Trust Warden and Dorset Police were advised.

On scene the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter reported that the landslide was extensive and continuing. A stretch of coastline of 1 to 1.5 miles and up to 200 yards inland was affected. The land was reported to be slipping with persons on the beach. Lyme Regis Coastguard proceeded along the beach with police officers and the EPO to advise members of the public to keep clear.

The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter provided safety cover from the air and reported on the extent of the landslip. The beach and the cliff top were cordoned off and members of the public were warned to keep clear. West Bay Coastguard assisted with keeping members of the public away while the area wss sealed off. The Coastguard Rescue Helicopter returned to base for fuel and the Police are on scene.

Sarah Etheridge, Watch Manager at Portland Coastguard said, "The area is extremely dangerous and we advise all members of the public to stay clear of the area. This landslip is very dangerous and very extensive and still sliding in places.".
