COASTGUARD CO-ORDINATE MEDICAL TRANSFER OF 5 HOUR OLD BABY

At Just after 2:00 p.m. on 10 February 2001, Hampshire Ambulance requested the use of Coastguard rescue helicopter 'India Juliet' to transfer a 5-hour-old baby, suffering from a cardiac condition, from Barnstable to Southampton General Hospital.

At 3:17 p.m., once the casualty was stabilised, 'India Juliet' departed for Lords Hill Helicopter Landing Site within the grounds of the North Devon District Hospital.

The aircrew made their concerns known to Solent Coastguard as to the suitability of the Lords Hill Helicopter Landing Site for the return journey, due to the heavy and sodden state of the ground. It was felt that the surface was unsuitable for the transportation of the incubator to the ambulance. It was therefore decided to land the baby, crew, and medical team on the Coastguard Helicopter Base at Lee on Solent Airfield. Hampshire Ambulance was thus informed of the change of landing site.

Swansea Coastguard arranged Coastguard cover at the Barnstable Landing Site and communications were established between Swansea Coastguard and Rescue Helicopter 'India Juliet' at 4:27 p.m.

Bob Terry, Watch Manager at Solent Coastguard said, "At 5:00 p.m. Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 'India Juliet' landed at Barnstable and the medical team were stabilising the baby for onward transportation to Southampton General. Estimated time of arrival at Southampton is 7:00 p.m. this evening."
