GRUESOME DISCOVERY AFTER CLIFF FALL MAN RECOVERED

Folkestone Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team was called at 6.20 p.m. on 13 March 2001 to a 22-year-old Asian man who threw himself off the Shakespeare Cliff, Folkestone.

Earlier, police Officers were called to the Cliff, at around 1740GMT on 13 March 2001 after members of the public reported a man acting strangely on the cliff top - but as they arrived, he jumped.

The horrified officers were already reeling from the shock of seeing the man leap into the abyss, but just before they found him on a ledge 30ft from the foot of the cliff, they discovered the corpse of another man.

"We do not know the identity of this person and there is no link between the two incidents," a police spokesman said.

A Coastguard rescue helicopter 'India Juliet' was called from Lee-on-Solent and a paramedic was lowered to the ledge.

The Asian man was given emergency medical treatment for serious and extensive injuries before being winched on board and flown to the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in Margate.

Dover Lifeboat later recovered the corpse, which coastguard’s estimate had been lying on the ledge for four months.

Dover Coastguard watch officer Alex Scott said: "This is a particularly remote location and Shakespeare Cliff is a well known landmark and the highest in the locality."

Police would not confirm if his condition was life threatening.
