SOLENT COASTGUARD ASSIST RAPID ASCENT DIVER

Solent Coastguard were called at around 10.25 am on 1 April 2001 to assist the diving boat, 'Girl Gray', after one of its divers made a rapid ascent.

The diver was on the surface having made a rapid ascent to the dive boat 'Girl Gray'. The divers had been diving on the wreck 'Fortuna'.

Having taken advice from the Duty Diving Officer at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, a decision was made to airlift the stricken diver to Portsmouth for medical examination and possible decompression.

Girl Gray is a twin engined Aquastar 43, which makes her the biggest charter boat in the Brighton fleet.

The Coastguard Rescue helicopter India Juliet from Lee on Solent airlifted the diver to Portsmouth. The Newhaven Lifeboat was also on scene and stood by.

Three other divers, who were also in the water, made their way back to Brighton on board the 'Girl Grey', which is owned by Southern Marine Services.

Bob Knox, Watch Manager said, 'On this occasion the diver appeared not to suffer any injury, however, it should act as a timely warning to all divers and diving clubs to consider their safety procedures.'

Conditions on scene were reasonable with a slight sea and good visibility.
