DEVIL’S CHIMNEY COLLAPSES AT BEACH HEAD

A section of some of Britain's most famous clifftop coastline has collapsed into the sea under the weight of excessive rainfall.

A chalk stack, part of the famous Beachy Head cliffs on the East Sussex coast, has disappeared from view.

No one was injured during the fall.

Experts say the 100ft chalk tower, known locally as Devil's Chimney, near Eastbourne, collapsed because of the huge amount of rainfall soaked up by the cliffs during recent months.

Eastbourne Borough Council has urged the public not to travel to Beachy Head to view the chalk fall due to the foot-and-mouth crisis.

Beachy Head is part of the South Downs that is currently closed due to the disease.
