NEW ETV AT DOVER COASTGUARD CALLED TO VESSEL ON FIRE

The new placed Coastguard Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) 'Anglian Monarch' was tasked to assist the Norwegian-registered car carrier 'Autofreighter' when her engine room caught fire in the early hours of 5 April 2001, she was on passage from Southampton to Zebbrugge and 24 miles East of Dover when the fire broke out.

Anglian Monarch

'Anglian Monarch' had been on station for less than 24 hours; replacing the ETV 'Far Turbot', when at 4:30 a.m. the French Coastguard contacted Dover Coastguard to assist with the 'Autofreighter' incident.

The vessel's engine room was sealed and pumped full of CO2 in an attempt to quell the fire. The fire in the engine room of the car carrier has gone out, a coastguard spokesman said. The 13 crew on board, made up of British, Irish and Portuguese, are all said to be uninjured. The vessel is carrying 395 vehicles.

Anglian Monarch stood by the 6000 GT, Norwegian registered vessel as the French Coastguard deal with the situation.

Rescue teams are making sure the fire has not re-ignited before the vessel, which is carrying 395 cars, is towed into Calais or Dunkirk.

The Norwegian Registered 'Autofreighter'

The safety features in engine rooms on carriers of this type mean the vessel could be back in service by this afternoon, said a coastguard spokesman.

He said: "If they find what caused the fire and fix it then it could be back at sea this afternoon. The fire is now believed to be out and we are waiting for it to cool down before it is towed into Calais or Dunkirk."

Weather on scene is south westerly force 4 with good visibility.
