CAR IN CLIFF FALL FATALITY

Brixham Coastguard were alerted at just before 8.00 p.m. on 8 April 2001 by the Devon and Cornwall police to a car which had gone over the cliff.

A woman died when her car fell 80ft down the 120ft Daddyhole Plain beauty spot at Torbay, Devon.

She was thought to have died instantly.

The wreckage of the car came to rest on a ledge 40ft from the foot of the cliff.

Police helicopter and ground teams together with coastguard and cliff rescue teams combed the wreckage and the rest of the cliff to search for any other casualties.

They did not know whether the woman was alone in the car at the time of the accident, which happened just before 8pm.

A spokesman for Brixham coastguards said: "There is at least one fatality from the accident.

"One occupant was found at the scene. She was still in the car but was dead when rescue teams arrived. "

The woman's car is thought to have ploughed through the barrier of a car park at the top of the cliff before tumbling down it.
