FRENCH YACHT SMASHES INTO ROCKS

Portland Coastguards were alerted on 26 May 2001 after a luxury vessel smashed into rocks in thick fog.

Two helicopters and a lifeboat were scrambled to the French yacht the ‘Savoy Truffle’ following the accident at St Albans ledge, near Swanage, Dorset early this morning.

Operations were hampered by poor weather, but crew from the lifeboat managed to board the vessel.

The 29-year-old skipper, who was alone on the boat, was unhurt.

A spokesman for Portland Coastguard said: "Our message to would-be yachtsmen keen to get on the water this weekend is to remain vigilant and always check the weather forecast before you leave home.

"Make sure your radio is working properly and you have plenty of flares and lifejackets for everyone on board."

He said there was thick fog and mist off the south coast that was forecast to stay all day, with very little wind expected.
