COLLISION IN DOVER STRAIT

A collision took place early on 19 June 2001 between two general cargo vessels both carrying scrap in the Dover Strait.

The incident took place at 8.30 a.m. in the southwest shipping lane some 10 miles south of Hastings. The collision took place between the`St Christophe' - which is carrying 3,600 metric tonnes of scrap - and the `Konga.’ that carries 2,700 metric tonnes of steel scrap.


MCA fixed wing aircraft `Echo November'

Both vessels sustained light damage. No casualties were sustained and no pollution has been reported. The `Konga' is now proceeding on to her original port of destination at Bayonne in France. After assessing damage the `St Christophe' is now making way to Seville in Spain.

Dover Coastguard has been co-ordinating the incident and the MCA fixed wing aircraft `Echo November' has been sent to overfly the area. The weather on scene today is southwesterly winds force 2 with a slight sea and no swell. The Agency's counter pollution branch was informed at the time of the incident as well as the Marine Accident Investigation Branch.
