QUARRY ACCIDENT MARKS START OF SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Brixham Coastguard were informed at just after 3.00p.m on 22 July 2001 by Ambulance Control that their assistance was required to an 11 year old girl after she fell backwards 30 ft into a quarry at Gover Valley, St Austell.

Coastguard immediately paged the St Austell Coastguard Team to attend and the team were on scene by around 3.20 pm along with police, fire and ambulance crews.

Due to the terrain and the equipment of the Coastguards the team were dispatched into the quarry along with paramedics who treated the child. The Coastguard team then carried the child in a Coastguard stretcher back to a naval rescue helicopter that was waiting at the landing site, which had been prepared by other members of the Coastguard team.

Alf Tupper, Brixham Coastguard Watch Manager said, "The close co-operation between all the services meant that we were able to rescue the child quickly and efficiently and airlift her to Treliske Hospital, Truro by 5.00 pm. She is now receiving treatment for spinal injuries.

"This was an unusual incident for us as the quarry is a mile inland, however we are equipped and trained to operate in this way and were pleased to assist.

"We would urge parents and guardians to be aware of the natural dangers both on the coast and inland and to keep a sharp eye on children whose minds might be elsewhere.

"We have been very busy today with a variety of incidents including an overdue vessel, a man with a suspected stroke, a diver who made a rapid ascent (after a dive of 30 metres), five youths cut off by the tide at Plymouth and some ordnance (an unspent smoke flare) at Tregantle Fort Beach, Plymouth."
