SEARCH FOR MISSING CHEF CALLED OFF

Falmouth Coastguard has called off a search for a chef missing from the QE2.

The Indian-born breakfast chef did not report for work at 4.30am on Monday 23 July, and a search of the ship failed to find him. The chef, said to be "very quiet" and a non-drinker, was last seen at 1.30am asleep in his cabin.

Falmouth coastguard searched a 200-mile stretch of sea, aided by a Nimrod from RAF Kinloss in Scotland.

Coastguard watch manager Peter Bullard said: "Out in the middle of the Atlantic, finding him is a very long hope."

He is believed to have gone overboard 90 miles south west of Ireland as the ship headed for its home port of Southampton after leaving New York last week.

His chances of survival now are said to be very poor.

The man will not name the man until next of kin is informed.
