VESSELS COLLIDE OFF ISLE OF WHITE

Solent Coastguard were contacted after the hydrofoil ‘Red Jet 2’, which was carrying 120 passengers, lost power in one engine at about 5.30pm on Saturday 4 August 2001 and the vessel collided with a yacht moored at Cowes.

The yacht suffered damage to its mast, although none of the passengers on board the hydrofoil was injured. They were evacuated from the craft as a precaution.

The hydrofoil got into difficulties as it was leaving Cowes harbour and, as a routine measure, the power supply was cut - forcing it to drift with the tide into the nearby yacht.

Coastguard officers were called to the scene and the vessel was towed back into Cowes.

A spokesman for Solent Coastguard said, "When one of the engines failed it was routine to cut supply as there was a fear that she may run aground. However, the tide caught her and she was taken into the moorings.

"There was never any danger to the passengers on board. I'm even told some of them were smiling when they got off."
