CHANNEL SWIMMER MISSING

Dover Coastguard was liaising with the French Coastguard last night after a 37-year-old Swiss channel swimmer went missing at about 8pm, 16 hours after setting off from Dover for Calais.

The man began the 20-mile route at 4am accompanied by a 33ft escort vessel, ‘Lady Sarah’.

'Anglian Monarch'

Coastguards said the coastguard emergency-towing vessel (ETV) ‘Anglian Monarch’, two French helicopters equipped with infrared equipment and two lifeboats were searching for him.

Dover Coastguard Watch Manager Colin Mulvana said: "The search has now been on-going for over four hours and unfortunately as yet no sign has been found of the missing swimmer.

"The search area is a fairly small one, just eight square miles, which is calculated by taking into consideration a number of factors including tides.

"The weather for searching this evening is very good with west-south-westerly force 4-5 winds and excellent visibility."

The swimmer went missing when he was only a mile north of the Calais Harbour entrance when the escort vessel ‘Lady Sarah’ lost sight of him.

Coastguards hope that the Swiss man may have swam to the shore but had not yet managed to contact anyone.
