999 CALL FROM CLIFF JUMPER

Coastguards dispatched a cliff rescue team to Beachy Head after a man intending to commit suicide changed his mind after landing on a ledge and dialled 999 from his mobile phone on 5 October 2001.

A winchman was sent down to raise the panicking man, whose fingernails had snapped off as he tried to scramble back to safety during the 25-minute incident, which occurred at the notorious suicide spot known locally as Sugar Loaf.


Beachy Head

The man, who had become wedged in the jagged rocks, had smashed on to a boulder 20ft down the 100ft cliffs in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

It is understand the man had originally intended to kill himself but then decided that wasn’t the way he wanted his life to go.

The man was later treated at Eastbourne District General Hospital for minor injuries.
