MAN OVERBOARD IRISH SEA FERRY

Liverpool Coastguard report that a 30-year-old man who plunged from the Hoverspeed Great Britain eight miles east of Ramsey on the Isle of Man is missing feared drowned.

The incident occurred at around 9.40am. during a trip from Belfast to Heysham, near Morecambe Bay, Lancashire on 22 April 2001.

The vessel immediately turned round and began a search of the area. It was called off at 1.10pm.

Lifeboats, private vessels, a Royal Navy ship 'Horworth' and a rescue helicopter from RAF Valley joined the search but with no success.

A spokesman for Liverpool Coastguard, who co-ordinated the search, said: "This was a very extensive search and the ferry had dropped markers so we can be pretty sure we were searching the right area.

"We believe the man has not survived, particularly with the water temperature being as cold as it is.

"We do not know how he came to fall off the ferry but it seems this was an accident rather than a suicide attempt."
