Western 066/01 8 May 2001 COASTGUARD WARN OF CAUSEWAY STRANDING Swansea Coastguard warns members of the public to check tide times and causeway opening times when two separate incidents on 7 May 2001 lead to 999 alerts. The first incident occurred when two people cut off by the tide on Sully Island, near Barry attempted to wade back to the mainland getting swept away in the process. A passer by alerted Swansea Coastguard using a mobile telephone and was able to inform the Coastguard from the scene as the pair luckily managed to get ashore after a few minutes in the water. The second incident involved 8 adults visiting Burry Holms, Gower via the causeway who dialled 999 for Coastguard when they realised they were cut off by the tide. The Bury Port RNLI inshore lifeboat, assisted by Rhossili Coastguard Rescue Team, rescued all 8. Swansea Coastguard Watch Officer, Bernie Kemble said, "If you intend to visit an area accessed only by a causeway you should check the tide times and causeway opening times with the local Coastguard before you set out and take notice of any information boards near the causeway itself. "If you do find yourself stranded and cut off by the tide, stay where you are, call the Coastguard on 999 if you can and wave your arms for help. Do not attempt to swim or wade ashore, the water is at its coldest now after the long winter months and after only a few minutes you will suffer the effects of the cold." |
