DIVERS DRAMATICALLY RESCUED

Liverpool Coastguard were alerted on 28 July 2001 by the skipper of the dive boat ‘Vale Royal Diver’ when two divers, one male and one female, were 45 minutes overdue from a dive.

Coastguards requested the launch of two lifeboats from Port St Mary and one from Port Erin and scrambled the RAF Valley helicopter into the rescue operation off the south west coast of the Calf of Man at 12.23pm.

Watch manager at Liverpool Coastguard, Jed Lynch, said this was the second time in as many days the coastguard has had to help divers who have run into trouble.

He said: ‘the two men were spotted on the surface five km from the dive boat. We recommend that divers don’t dive too close to the shore in coastal waters as the tide moves at about four-five knots and when divers surface, if their dive boat crew does not spot them immediately, they can be swept swiftly away from the boat.’

Both divers escaped injury and were returned to their boat.
