Homemade Loud Check shirt !

EOG

Home made loud check Civilian shirt, woven pattern not printed. Note fall collar, slash breast pockets and small bone or china buttons. Probably not a good idea to wear this kind of shirt if you are portraying a middle-aged soldier or plain country person.

For example, from Hardtack and Coffee by John Billings, on a particular kind of 'new recruit' :

" Their shirts were 'boiled,' that is, white ones, or, if woollen, were of some loud checkered pattern, only less conspicuous than the flag they had sworn to defend. In brief, their general makeup would have stamped them as military dudes, had such a class of creatures been then extant."
