Confederate Breadbag and Soldier's effects

TCW

This is a good illustration of a typical Confederate Breadbag or Haversack, also showing some of the personal effects a soldier would carry with him. However, don't assume that he carried all this stuff in his Breadbag. The Breadbag carried exactly what it said, bread and rations. Yes, he would have carried plate, KFS and possibly tobacco and pipe in there, but all the other stuff would probably be carried in his knapsack, blanket roll or pockets.

Breadbags soon became distinctly unhealthy, with pork fat, fruit, salt, coffee (or coffee substitute) and tobacco nestling together and jumbling about in all weathers. Not the best place to keep letters from home, writing equipment, housewives etc. I know, I've tried it - you won't believe what can breed in a housewife smeared in pork fat, soap and tobacco!
