Federal Trousers showing the high rise at the back. This was so that when the soldier bent over, when wearing a Shell or short jacket, he would not reveal his shirt, which was still seen as an 'unmentionable' garment in polite Victorian Society. Privates would not have the NCO stripe along the seams.
Note the tie back, this meant the soldier could adjust the fit of the trousers. This meant that with a good fitting pair, he would not need Braces (suspenders). Also note the height from Crotch to top. These trousers were worn very high; many reproduction trousers do not feature this, so that the whole 'look' of a re-enactor can be completely wrong if he has purchased trousers from a Sutler who makes trousers to a pattern that never existed.
Many re-enactors wear their trousers wrong i.e. wear them as 'hipsters' as they would wear modern trousers. Always order a longer leg than you need, so that you can adjust the length after wearing them in the correct fashion.....nice and high!
