The Scalawags are a group of men and women of all ages who have an interest in the American Civil War (1861-65), and like to 'get away from it all' for a dozen or so weekends a year to attempt to recreate soldiers and citizens of 1863. We are primarily a military Living History group, but have a burgeoning civilian camp, with the same ideals of accuracy and, above all, a commitment to enjoying the hobby!

The Scalawags are a Living History group, i.e. we attempt to recreate the dress, drill, camplife and attitudes of the soldier and citizen of 1863. We are not strictly 're-enactors', as we try to go a bit further than just 'dressing up'. We have researched photographs, diaries, manuscripts, newspapers and Quartermaster returns of the period and together with advice from our pards in the States and visits to museums and battlefields, have put together what we believe to be as accurate an impression of that period as we can.

We are based in the United Kingdom, with the majority of our members living in and around the Home Counties of England, and in the Belfast area of Northern Ireland. Most of the events we attend are situated in Southern England, but our members are prepared to travel for a good event. Our event itinerary for 2004 follows below...

We are always on the lookout for committed members; if you have always wanted to try re-enacting and you are interested in achieving the standards that we aspire to, then contact us. We have good quality spare equipment to get you started; we will advise you on what and where to buy your own uniform and accoutrements and we will help with transport to get you to the events we attend.
Family members are welcome as long as they too have a commitment to being 'Living Historians' and conform to the dress and social mores of 1863 USA.
Finally, though of course we take Living History seriously and we do our best to honour those who lived and died, both Black and White, soldier and civilian, Federal and Confederate during the War Between the States, we do realise that this is a hobby and we do our very best to make sure it is enjoyable for all our members.
So if you are looking for something a little different from the norm, a hobby that will bring you a feeling of immense satisfaction and achievement, a chance to escape the hectic speed of everyday life, returning to work refreshed and with new enthusiasm, contact us right away.........you won't regret it !
