Colchester
10 Cambridge 6
9th
June 2009 Eastern League
Colchester
took to the water against National league side Cambridge in the
knowledge that a vast improvement would be needed if they were to
remain competitive in this league. Colchester welcomed back the
newly married Simon Lecomber into the side, his presence was immediately
noted as quick passing found him in space twice early on. Rasping
shots gave the Cambridge ‘keeper no chance and Colchester
found themselves 2 goals up in the first two minutes. Cambridge
then had a man sent out for a foul and Colchester punished them
when Lecomber again found the back of the net. Success in an area
that had been so disappointing in the previous week. At this time
it looked as though Colchester would run away with proceedings.
But Cambridge are a strong side and fought back to score 2 goals
before Lecomber added another at the end of the first quarter.
The
second quarter was a scrappy affair as Cambridge fought back. There
were numerous minor fouls and a fair amount of 30 second exclusions
for major fouls; however neither side could take advantage of this.
Eventually Cambridge scored past Colchester ‘keeper Jimmy
Lang and quickly followed with another, to draw the scores level.
Colchester finally took advantage of a man up situation when Martin
Vinter rifled a shot into the top corner to give Colchester a slender
lead.
Shooting
into the shallow end clearly suited Colchester and Lecomber as he
again found the net twice to re-establish Colchester’s lead,
but again Cambridge fought back. Colchester introduced Ollie Tomlinson
to try and inject some pace into the team and impress older brother
James, who was watching from the sidelines with a very nasty neck
injury. But this could not prevent Cambridge adding 2 goals in the
third quarter.
The
final quarter began with Cambridge just one goal down at 7-6 and
Colchester were attacking into their less favoured deep end. As
the attackers tired it was defenders Vinter and David Nicholson
who rose to the occasion with 2 very well worked goals. Lecomber
also scored to take his personal tally to 7 on the night. This put
the game to rest as Colchester came out 10-6 winners and put them
on good form for their annual trip to Holland to take part in the
international Borculo tournament at the weekend.

Claim Winter League/Cup Double
Colchester
20 - Harlow 9
Colchester’s winter season drew to a grand finale on Tuesday
night with a league cup final and league double header with Harlow.
This is a handicap cup and Colchester faced the uphill battle to
overcome an 8 goal deficit in each of the two legged finals. Having
travelled to Harlow and beaten them 15-3 a few weeks ago, Colchester
still found themselves 4 goals down starting this cup final second
leg.
Colchester
started well as James Tomlinson won an early penalty, which Martin
Vinter coolly slotted past the Harlow goalkeeper. Harlow produced
some good polo but Colchester pressed their defenders into mistakes
and early on Simon Lecomber took advantage of this by adding 2 more
goals to Colchester’s tally before the end of the first quarter.
Colchester
were keen not to get carried away, but the next quarter all but
ended Harlow’s slim chances of a major upset. Some breathtaking
water polo from the home team saw Harlow fall into disarray. Simon
Nicholson used his speed and strength to score 3 goals in the second
quarter these were added to by braces for Lecomber and Vinter. A
superb turn and shot from veteran Eddie Corcos showed there is plenty
for the younger members still to learn from him. Colchester had
blown Harlow’s hopes away in one quarter with a devastating
spell of polo to leave the scores 11-2 at half time.
Colchester
changed things around in the third quarter to give brothers Ollie
and Elliot Tomlinson valuable experience in a big game. Both played
well as Colchester continued to add further goals, 2 more for Lecomber,
another for Eddie Corcos and James Tomlinson showed his younger
brothers how to score. But Colchester were now up against a sterner
test as they tried to inject youth into their side. Goalkeeper Jimmy
Lang and Captain David Nicholson now had to work hard to keep Harlow
at bay as they fought to salvage some pride from the game. They
did manage 3 goals in the third quarter but the scores remained
firmly in Colchester’s favour at 15-5 going into the final
quarter.
The
final quarter saw Colchester coast to a comfortable victory, Lecomber
and Vinter both scored to take their personal tallies to 7 and 4
respectively. James Tomlinson added another and goals for Chris
Harrington and a long range effort from Carig Snowdon saw the game
finish with the scores 20-9 in Colchester’s favour. This also
means Colchester have gone through the whole winter league having
suffered only one defeat and are now crowned league and cup winners.

Colchester
9 Hornchurch 8 - 27th May 2008
Colchester
came through their toughest game of the season with an awesome display
of team work and grit to beat Hornchurch 9-8 on Tuesday night. Colchester
were missing both specialist keepers so it was up to captain David
Nicholson to take on goal keeping responsibilities. Nicholson was
shaky at times, as he stood up to the power and accuracy of Hornchurch’s
ex GB front man but made some extremely important saves through
out the game.
The first quarter ended 3-3 with Colchester taking the game to the
visitors. Simon Nicholson used his power and strength to open the
scoring and Simon Lecomber finished off two good moves. Hornchurch
always had a reply and the match remained even. A tactical change
was made at the beginning of the second quarter as Chris Harrington
came in to replace attacker Simon Nicholson. His impact was immediate
scoring after a Craig Snowdon shot rebounded off the post. Harrington
almost scored a second with a snap shot which followed some very
slick passing. Hornchurch continued to stretch the Colchester defence
which was being marshalled by the impressive Eddie Corcos and the
ever present Martin Vinter. The quarter ended 5-5 with Lecomber
scoring again.
The third quarter was tighter still. The introduction of Richard
Horrocks help to steady the defence and Snowdon was sent up to help
James Tomlinson and Lecomber in attack. Snowdon and Lecomber had
plenty of chances to put Colchester further ahead but couldn't capitalise
on the hard work from Tomlinson keeping the ball in the Hornchurch
half. Lecomber scored his fourth of the game as the quarter finished
6-6.
As the fourth quarter began Simon Nicholson was reintroduced into
the game. Hornchurch started to find some rhythm and soon took a
two goal lead for the first time in the match. Colchester did well
to shake the two goal deficit off. Corcos ventured forward for the
first time in the game and after shaking off his marker finished
neatly. Not long after, Tomlinson was fouled yards from the Hornchurch
goal. As the Hornchurch keeper berated the ref quick thinking Simon
Nicholson called for the ball and placed it into the empty Hornchurch
goal. The keeper was swiftly ejected from the pool for complaining
further as the officials tightened their control on proceedings.
As the seconds to the final whistle ticked away Colchester looked
to capitalise on their one man advantage. Snowdon and Simon Nicholson
passed the ball between each other neatly before Vinter was found.
Vinter picked up the ball and rattled it into the back of the net
with the last attack of the match.
Colchetser battled hard and proved that their current form is a
product of their natural ability and new hard working ethic. The
team put in a fantastic performance but it was defender Martin Vinter
who was singled out for special attention as he was named man of
the match.
Colchester now have a week to recover before they embark on their
annual trip to Holland to play in one of Europe’s largest
water polo tournaments.

Colchester
12 Ipswich 1 - 13th May 2008
Colchester
played host to Ipswich in the first round of the Eastern handicap
cup. As Colchester has dominated over their local Suffolk rivals
in recent times there was a huge handicap of 8 goals to make up.
Ipswich turned up with a relatively strong side and had some new
younger faces mixed with the usual experienced ones. Colchester’s
team was also strong as they welcomed Ryan Van Ginkel and Elliott
Tomlinson back into the side. Van Ginkel was to play the first quarter
in goal and produced some good saves as Ipswich tried to make a
fast start to the game. Colchester’s defence held firm with
David Nicholson not allowing the Ipswich attackers to settle. However
Colchester were equal to the challenge and finished the first quarter
in the ascendancy thanks to a goal from in-form Simon Lecomber and
a penalty from Martin Vinter.
Colchester
realised that they would have to up their game to bring themselves
back into contention with the deficit. The second quarter saw the
introduction of Simon Nicholson into the pool and regular goalkeeper
Ross Knevett took up his position in goal. Nicholson’s strength
saw him shake off Ipswich defenders at will and he scored two goals.
The improved supply of passes to Lecomber on the left wing allowed
the ginger winger to score 3 goals and Colchester opened up a 7-1
lead at half time.
Ipswich,
by now, had started to lose their composure and regular moans at
the referee saw some of their players being sent to the side lines.
Colchester were able to capitalise on these man-up situations and
further goals in the third quarter from Nicholson and 2 from James
Tomlinson saw a 10-1 advantage open up.
Eddie
Corcos was rewarded for his hard work when he was awarded a penalty,
which Vinter duly scored. Another Lecomber goal, in the final quarter,
saw Colchester safely through to the next round of the competition.
On a night when goals were important Colchester proved that patience
also pays off, Simon Lecomber was voted man of the match for his
5 goal performance.

Colchester
8 Cambridge 3 - 6th May 2008
Colchester
produced one of their best performances in a long time as they beat
a strong Cambridge side 8-3, at home, on Tuesday night. Although
the score suggests the home side won with ease in reality this was
far from the truth. Cambridge are a strong, fit and technical side
and turned up with a full quota of 13 players, as waterpolo allows
rolling substitutes, they continually had fresh players to turn
to. Colchester rose to the challenge admirably as they pressed Cambridge
into mistakes from the start. Martin Vinter in particular worked
hard, defending well and scoring two penalties after 'penalty king'
Edward Corcos was dethroned under pressure.
Simon Lecomber grabbed two quick goals as Colchester showed their
intent from the start to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first
quarter. By the second quarter Cambridge were rattled, they lost
a player for the rest of the game when he showed dissent to the
referees as Colchester were awarded their first penalty. This coupled
with a fine Simon Nicholson goal saw Colchester lead 4-2 at half
time. Goalkeeper Ross Knevett was solid as usual when called upon
between the sticks, pulling off some great saves to add to Cambridge’s
frustration.
It was not until the third quarter that Colchester took control
of the game, using quick breaks and capitalising on man up situations.
Cambridge had always looked dangerous, but had now realised they
were up against an equally strong and determined team. During one
of these counter attacks, Colchester used patient build up play,
before James Tomlinson was finally rewarded with a goal after hitting
the bar numerous times. The final goal of the game was scored by
Craig Snowdon who swam through unmarked and beat the keeper. Colchester
played with determination and in the end has a little bit more class
to win the match. Ross Kevett Sports Injury Clinic man of the match
was Martin Vinter after an awesome display.

Clacton
8 Colchester 6 24 April 2008.
Colchester
travelled in Clacton in their first game in the summer Eastern league
on Thursday evening. After the 4-4 draw in the corresponding winter
league game, Colchester were confident of getting another result
against their Tendering rivals. The game started at frantic pace
with both sides defending well. Martin Vinter and David Nicholson
marshalled the Clacton attack well. On the occasions that keeper
Ross Knevett was tested he did not disappoint performing heroically
between the posts. Colchester stormed into a 1-0 lead when a fantastic
back flick shot from Ryan Van Ginkel stunned the Clacton goalkeeper
and rifled into the roof of the net. The first quarter ended 1-1
as Clacton scored a late equaliser.
The second quarter was disappointing for Colchester as it ended
3-1 to the home team. Eddie Corcos, Craig Snowdon and Simon Lecomber
had a number of opportunities to score but none were able to find
the back of the net. Clacton punished Colchester for their misses
and caught the away team on the break.
In the
third quarter Colchester began to find their feet again as Lecomber
scored. However on one counter attack Snowdon pull up with cramp
and missed the remainder of the quarter. Martin Vinter scored a
fine lob and Elliott Tomlinson hit the bar but Colchester still
trailed 7 4 and it was looked like being another victory to the
seasiders.
The final quarter started at a frantic pace, Colchester pressured
Clacton and were able to get two quick goals back through Van Ginkel
and Lecomber. Chris Harrington and Elliott Tomlinson injected new
pace into the Colchester attack and the deficit was now only one
goal. However Colchester just couldn't make enough of their opportunities.
Clacton won the game 8-6 but Colchester can be very pleased with
their performance. The Nicholas Anthony Man of the match was scorers
of two fine goals Ryan Van Ginkel.
Colchester
will hope to get back to winning ways on Tuesday night in the Eastern
Handicap cup against Ipswich, although they will have their work
cut out as the handicap sees Ipswich start 8 goals up.

Chelmsford
4 Colchester 13, 15th April 2008
Colchester
began their summer league campaign with a rousing 13-4 away victory
against Chelmsford. Colchester welcomed back Stuart White and Ross
Knevett to the side; this meant they had a full strength defence
with Knevett behind them. He would play a key part in the game especially
in a tight first quarter which ended 3-3.
Colchester
looked good throughout the match but from the second quarter they
turned up the pressure. For the second time in a week Simon Lecomber
scored six goals in a match, as he tormented the Chelmsford defence
with some great attacking swims. During this period Colchester began
to open up the relatively inexperienced Chelmsford team with swims
from the back by Craig Snowdon and brothers David and Simon Nicholson
Colchester’s passing was crisp and it was only their finishing
that let them down as they produced chance after chance. Martin
Vinter and the Nicholson brothers all scored two each and Eddie
Corcos scored one goal after tireless work at the attacking end
of the pitch.
Colchester will be pleased with such a positive start to their season
with pleasing performances from every player. Ross Knevett will
be particularly pleased with his contribution. Knevett only conceded
one goal in the last three quarters and made a string of impressive
saves. Having Knevett back meant stand in ‘keeper Ryan Van
Ginkel played his first game out on pitch and despite tiring late
on produced a gritty display in midfield. At the end of the game
Knevett was rightfully awarded the man of match. This was conveniently
sponsored by Ross Knevett’s Sports Injury Therapy Clinic.
Colchester’s
pursuit of the Summer Essex league continues at home to Harlow in
a month. But they also compete in the Summer Eastern league where
their first game is away to local rivals, Clacton, next Thursday.
===========================================================================================
Harlow
vs. Colchester 7 April 2008
Colchester
finished their winter league campaign with an away fixture against
Harlow which they easily won 8-4. Harlow's home pool is currently
under repair so both teams travelled to Hatfield to play the fixture.
The big pool in Hertfordshire suited Colchester to a tee; Colchester’s
speed soon had the Harlow team struggling to compete. They quickly
began to exploit the space on the wings and goals soon followed.
Simon Lecomber scored a hatrick in the first quarter as Colchester
began to open up an unassailable lead.
Eddie
Corcos shook off the disappointment of his recent penalty fiascos
and scored two well worked goals to put the game well beyond doubt.
Colchester even replaced regular goalkeeper, Ryan Van Ginkel, with
Elliot Tomlinson for the third quarter showing how much flexibility
there is in their team. Both helped to keep the home side at bay
on the odd occasion they breached the Colchester defence. Lecomber
kept up the pressure in the second half with some fierce shooting
and scored three more to rightfully earn this weeks man of the match
award. Colchester finished the season on a high and have finished
the Eastern Winter League in second place behind arch rivals Clacton.
However, there is no rest as the team now begins the Eastern and
Essex summer leagues with an away fixture at Chelmsford next Tuesday.
Following this seasons improving results Colchester will be looking
to finally looking overcome Clacton in the summer leagues.
===========================================================================================
Basildon
11 vs. Colchester 9 30/03/08
Colchester
travelled to Basildon on Sunday hoping to continue their recent
good form. The winter league is coming to a close and with so many
games to squeeze into a short period Colchester travelled with no
subs or recognised goalkeeper, so goal keeping duties were shared
by four outfield player over the duration of the match. Colchester
welcomed back Simon Nicholson in their attack after a short sabbatical
from playing. In the first quarter Nicholson's break seemed to pay
off as he scored a fantastic lob with his first shot. The game flowed
from end to end. Colchester drew level at 4-4 at the end of the
quarter when James Tomlinson set up Elliot Tomlinson.
Colchester were finding it difficult to replace their missing keepers.
Basildon took advantage of this and began to break away, however
goals from Craig Snowdon and Richard Horrocks kept Colchester in
with a chance. The third quarter however ended with Colchester 11-7
down. Eddie Corcos was unfortunate not to score and James Tomlinson
did score to keep Colchester in the match but they needed five goals
in the final quarter.
Within seconds of the restart Craig Snowdon had a goal cruelly disallowed.
Soon after Martin Vinter saw a shot sail over the cross bar. Even
a Simon Nicholson penalty was not enough as Colchester eventually
lost 11-9. Man of the match was Simon Nicholson who scored 4 goals
on his return to action. The final game of the winter league is
away at Harlow on 7th April, then it is straight into Summer league
action.
===========================================================================================
Clacton
4 Colchester 4
Colchester
travelled to Clacton on Thursday night looking for revenge after
their embarrassing home defeat to their Tendring rivals last month.
As the winter league draws to a close Colchester are hoping to make
a late assault for top position and a win in Clacton would provide
the momentum they need in their quest to be crowned champions.
Ross Knevett returned to the side and was straight back in between
the goal posts. Throughout the game Knevett was constantly tested
but pulled off a variety of stunning saves to keep Colchester hopes
alive. Colchester took the lead early on when James Tomlinson found
himself in space in front of goal. Tomlinson stayed calm and blasted
past the helpless Clacton keeper. Colchester pressed for a second
but Clacton's fluent attack was cut off by Captain David Nicholson
and star defender Martin Vinter, who worked hard all evening to
keep them at bay.
Clacton equalised but Tomlinson struck again towards the end of
the second quarter. This time latching on to a pass from Craig Snowdon
and scoring with ease. During the third quarter Clacton became more
and more dangerous. The normally attacking Simon Lecomber was called
back to do some fantastic last ditch defending at vital times in
the match. Chris Harrington and Elliott Tomlinson were given a run
out and only added to Colchester's hard working attitude.
In the final quarter Colchester went behind for the first time.
However Colchester fought back quickly with goals from Eddie Corcos
and Martin Vinter. As the final seconds ticked away Colchester pushed
forward, just needing to keep possession for the final minute of
the game. But as Colchester attacked they lost possession allowing
Clacton a quick counter attack. Clacton swiftly found the back of
the net with the last throw of the ball.
The game ended 4-4 and Colchester were rightfully disappointed to
let the lead slip. Their hard work was matched by their skill. This
was particularly evident in man of the match Martin Vinter.
===========================================================================================
Colchester
vs Basildon 18/3/08
Colchester
recorded their second home win in a row last Tuesday with a 9-6
win against Basildon. There was a frantic start to the game as Colchester
crept into a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter. It was
not until the third quarter that Colchester started to pull away
from the opposition. Colchester put in one of their best winter
league performances so far and goal keeper Van Ginkel was rarely
tested - even allowing himself to play a rare quarter outfield towards
the end of the game.
Two goals game from man of the match, Captain David Nicholson. Nicholson
scored at vital times in the game and helped to keep Colchester
tight grip on proceedings. James Tomlinson and Simon Lecomber continued
their hot form in front of goal helping themselves to three goals
each. Team Junior, Elliott Tomlinson was impressive throughout the
game and was rewarded towards the end with his first goal for the
club. A tough away fixture awaits Colchester against Clacton, this
impressive win leaves Colchester in good stead for the big derby
game which will decide who is to be crowned winter Eastern league
champions.
===========================================================================================
Colchester
7 Chelmsford 4
Colchester
got their league campaign back on track with a 7-4 win over Chelmsford
at Leisure World on Tuesday. This was the reverse fixture from a
fortnight ago when Colchester had to fight tooth and nail to salvage
a 10-10 draw in Chelmsford. Colchester took a more patient and measured
approach this time round. A tidy lob from Craig Snowdon put Colchester
one goal ahead. However a mix-up between Snowdon and Chris Harrington
led to a penalty which goalkeeper Ryan Van Ginkel was unable to
stop.
Colchester did not see this as a set back and continued to play
the game at their own tempo. Eddie Corcos was on the score sheet
again taking both his goals well and never allowing the Chelmsford
defence to settle. However later in the match Corcos let his penalty
king crown slip. Colchester were awarded a penalty, which Corcos
duly slammed against the woodwork. The miss did not come back to
haunt Colchester who continued to dictate the game to Chelmsford.
In the previous encounter between the teams Colchester had struggled
to keep pace with Chelmsford’s younger players, but in their
own pool Colchester dominated from the start. Simon Lecomber continued
his good goal scoring form with a well taken shot when Chelmsford
were reduced to 6 players for a major foul and David Nicholson scored
an important goal to keep Colchester ahead
Colchester
were leading comprehensively at half time 5-1 and looked to be cruising
towards victory, unfortunately this didn’t happen as Chelmsford
fought back in the third quarter to leave the score 5-3 going into
the final phase of the game. Colchester fought back well and, despite
Chelmsford’s ‘keeper being in top form, started to again
resume control. Star man James Tomlinson, who had caused problems
for the Chelmsford side all game, was rewarded with a goal and Martin
Vinter broke forward to rifle a shot past the Chelmsford keeper.
Colchester welcomed back Stuart White from injury, who gave a good
account of himself, never letting the Chelmsford attackers settle
into a rhythm and Elliot Tomlinson was unlucky not to get on the
score sheet and would have done had a he received a better pass
while going one on one with the keeper. Colchester finished the
game in high spirits and were more than happy to get back to winning
ways. Barker and Associates man of the match was James Tomlinson.
===========================================================================================
Colchester
Fight Back For Draw
Colchester
made an epic come back on Tuesday in a 10-10 draw away at Chelmsford.
Chelmsford started the match fiercely and despite some good goalkeeping
Ryan Van Ginkel was unable to stop Chelmsford from taking a 6-0
lead within the first two quarters. Colchester were punished for
a slow start and only goals from James Tomlinson and David Nicholson
at the close of the second half gave Colchester a fighting chance.
The second half began brightly for Colchester, the introduction
of Simon Lecomber into the pool paid off instantly. Goals from Lecomber,
Tomlinson, Martin Vinter and two from the clubs newly crowned penalty
competition champion Edward Corcos, evened the score at 7-7. Chelmsford
were almost behind for the first time when Snowdon latched on to
a Lecomber pass but his goal was disallowed.
Colchester’s pressure had paid off to get the scores level
and the last quarter was a tense affair as Chelmsford reformed and
Colchester looked to take the lead for the first time in the game.
Colchester trailed the home side 10-9 in the final minutes of the
last quarter. Simon Lecomber scored from distance, after a mighty
debate between the referee and the Chelmsford goalkeeper, the goal
was given. As the clock counted down to full time, Craig Snowdon
shot from distance but could only hit the bar, that was to be the
last chance of the game as it finished 10-10.
Colchester took too long to take control of the game and faced an
uphill struggle for four quarters. However when they did click together
as a team there were some promising signs as Colchester look to
improve on recent results in the league. Ardleigh Car Boots Man
of the Match was Simon Lecomber. If you are interested in joining
waterpolo please contact Martin Vinter at m.vinter@yahoo.com

Cup
Disappointment for 'not so buoyant' Colchester
Colchester
went into a tough Eastern league semi final against Clacton full
of confidence following last week’s 15-2 drubbing of Harlow.
With new signing South African, Ryan Van Ginkel in goal Colchester
seemed to be at full strength. The new goalkeeper would have a tough
debut with Clacton's relentless attack.
From the off Colchester struggled with Clacton not allowing Colchester
any space and offering solutions to every Colchester attack. Before
long Colchester were 3 goals down and only a Simon Nicholson goal
to their credit. Colchester’s frustration was clear to see
as shots hit the woodwork or saved by the Clacton goalkeeper. The
game would get worse as Colchester began to self destruct and despite
making some fine saves Van Ginkel was unable to keep Clacton at
bay for long as they ran out 9-1 winners. A bitterly disappointing
result for Colchester but one they will have to get over quickly
when they return to league matches next week.

15 Harlow 2
Leisure
World 5th Feb 2008
Colchester
stepped up their campaign for Eastern league glory with a 15-2 victory
over Harlow last Tuesday. Colchester had their strongest squad of
the year with only Stuart White and goalkeeper Ross Knevett missing.
It was up to Captain David Nicholson to keep out the Harlow attack
without the aid of a specialist goalkeeper. Nicholson rose to the
challenge only conceding two late in the final quarter thus providing
a solid foundation for the outfield players.
At
the other end of the pool Simon Nicholson continued his fine goal
scoring form helping himself to four goals. Colchester attacked
and defended well as a team and started to play some very good polo.
The goals were shared amongst several players. Midfielders, Craig
Snowdon and Chris Harrington were rewarded for their hard work with
a goal each. Eddie Corcos showed his years of experience, holding
off the Harlow defence and even scoring two well taken goals.
Martin
Vinter broke through the Harlow defence to score twice and Simon
Lecomber also recorded a brace of goals as he continued his comeback
after six months out with an eye injury. James Tomlinson was given
a torrid time by the Harlow defence, and ended the game covered
in scratches, but still managed three goals.
Colchester
needed this morale boosting performance before the semi final of
the Eastern league cup, to be played against arch rivals Clacton
next Tuesday.

So
Near For Colchester
Colchester
faced their toughest challenge of the New Year with a match against
top of the table Clacton on Tuesday. The last time Colchester beat
their rivals was in early 2006 so the home side were keen to finally
end Clacton's stronghold in this fixture. Colchester welcomed back
two long term absentees, with Stuart White returning to fitness
and Simon Lecomber returning from a nasty eye injury. Lecomber's
return was felt instantly as he helped himself to a goal in the
first and final quarter of the game.
Colchester battled hard throughout the match but their grit and
determination was always matched by a strong Clacton side. Clacton
held on to a two goal lead for a majority of the match, until the
third quarter when Colchester dominated and came right back into
the match. Simon Nicholson, a man in goal scoring form scored two
on the night and could have had four but saw two legitimate goals
cruelly disallowed by the referee.
Goals from Craig Snowdon at the end of the first and third quarters
helped to keep the fight alive in the home side. However Clacton
managed to hold on to their lead and win the game 7-6. Colchester
were unlucky with Martin Vinter hitting the bar during the game
and goal keeper Ross Knevett pulled off an array of impressive saves.
This now leaves Colchester with some work to do to stay in contention
of winning the winter league, although there is an eagerly awaited
chance for revenge, when Colchester take on Clacton in the semi
final of the cup in a couple of weeks.

Halt Colchester’s Winning Start
Colchester

Crown Pools 18/01/2008
Colchester
looked to build on their winning start in 2008 with a return trip
to Ipswich last Friday night. A depleted Colchester squad arrived
in Ipswich with high spirits after their 9-5 home victory over Ipswich
at the start of the month.
Colchester
started brightly; Simon Nicholson was causing problems to the Ipswich
defence with his pace. Confidence
was growing, some slick passing and good ball retention was on display
as Colchester eased into the lead. James Tomlinson, making his first appearance for Colchester
for some time, put in a solid and assured performance. Team junior,
Elliott Tomlinson continued his good form too, working hard for
the team in the pool and making some good saves when called to take
up position in the Colchester goal.
Martin
Vinter took a break from marshalling the defence to add two goals,
if not for an uncharacteristic penalty miss would have had a third.
For all his hard work and endeavour Chris Harrington was rewarded
with an opportunity in front of goal which he finished with ease.
Colchester
took an 8-5 lead into the final quarter but couldn’t hold
onto their lead as Ipswich fought back and Colchester’s lack
of a specialist keeper cost them and the match finished 8-8.
The league now hangs in the balance and could come down to
a crunch fixture against Clacton next week.

Colchester
started their new year in style with a convincing 9-5 victory against
Ipswich in the winter league. Colchester played the home tie with
an almost full strength side with only two players missing. Almost
two months had passed since Colchester’s last game but there
were no signs of any rust as James Tomlinson helped himself to three
quick goals. Martin Vinter added to Colchester’s impressive
start with a signature long range shot which left the Ipswich keeper
with no chance.
Colchester
goalkeeper Ross Knevett was kept busy in the second quarter and
the defence had to be at there best as Ipswich grew in confidence.
Colchester soon thwarted the pressure from the away team with two
goals form Veteran Utility man Eddie Corcos.
In
the final two quarters Colchester began to close the game out with
goals from Simon Nicholson and Craig Snowdon. Tomlinson’s
fourth goal of the night sealed the 9-5 victory for Colchester.

8 Clacton 10
Leisure World 16/01/2007
It’s
still too early to call this game a season decider but it without
doubt gave Colchester a usefulness indicator of what has to be done
to stop Clacton from taking the Winter League Championship. Contrasting
recent ties where Clacton were fortunate to have take anything from
recent games - this time round they deserved the narrow edge they
got.
From
the beginning Colchester chased the game. As the first whistle blew
the team were pinned so far back in their own half that Simon Lecomber
was prominent in defense – a rare sight indeed. During this
time referee Dave Smith sent out Lecomber for his first major foul.
In a split second Clacton delivered the first sucker punch of the
game, scoring from the resulting man up. Simon Nicholson inspired
a fight back equalizing halfway through the quarter. The home team
tried to slow the game down and dictate the play. At the same time
Clacton were able to profit from slack passing and poor awareness,
at times, from Colchester. Clacton took the lead once again but
Simon Nicholson was on hand to score a second proving Colchester
always had a response to their opposition. Colchester trailed at
the end of the second quarter. Clacton benefited, yet again, from
another man up after Martin Vinter was given his first major of
the game.
The
game was lost in the second quarter. If a defining moment was needed
it would be when Vinter suffered from cramp a minute into the second
period. The quick change to replace him resulted in a disorganised
side – which ultimately cost Colchester the match. Clacton
pounced on the opportunity to take advantage instantly. Goalkeeper
Ross Knevett returned to the side but was left with no chance as
Clacton scored three goals on the bounce. As Vinter returned to
action Colchester began to pull the game back. Simon Nicholson and
Lecomber both scored – however Clacton scored again too to
take a 7-4 lead at half time.
The
defence of Stuart White, Martin Vinter and David Nicholson were
having a mixed day. They contained Clacton admirably but were let
down by other players in counter attacking and man up situations.
However it would be the defence who inspired any notion of a comeback
in the third quarter. Martin Vinter scored two rumbling shots from
distance. Following this David Nicholson burst forward from defence
to score a trademark important goal. Although Colchester won the
quarter Clacton managed to score twice to keep the lead going into
the final quarter.
Colchester
battled hard in the final quarter, however it wasn’t hard
enough to take back control of the game. A goal from Clacton after
fourth minutes was quickly matched by Simon Nicholson -who scored
the last goal of the game. Clacton pressed hard and never gave the
ball away cheaply limiting Colchester’s attacks. As the final
whistle went a sullen Colchester had to accept they were deservedly
beaten - but only just. This, like so many times before, was a very
very bitter pill to swallow.

(4), S Lecomber (1), C Snowdon, E Corcos, R Horrocks, T Farghaly,

Ipswich 6 Colchester 16
Crown Pools 12/01/2007
This
match was a convincing win, however at times the performance was
unconvincing from Colchester. Yet if the performance was not persuasive
of Colchester’s credentials to be league challengers - the
score line argued otherwise.
Colchester
played the game without a recognized keeper. Nevertheless noble
efforts between the sticks from Eddie Corcos, Martin Vinter, Richard
Vinter and Simon Nicholson ensured Ipswich’s six goals were
dwarfed by sixteen in reply from Colchester.
Despite
spending a quarter in goal Simon Nicholson managed to help himself
to five goals. The captain was followed closely by Simon Lecomber,
who scoring four. The two attackers have now scored 35 goals in
the first four games of the winter league. If this form continues
surely nothing stand between Colchester and the winter league top
spot.
Once
again the attack were supported by a hard working midfield containing
Chris Harrington, Craig Snowdon, Richard Vinter and David Nicholson.
Richard Vinter playing his first game for some time put in a far
superior outfield performance, compared to his goalkeeping, and
capped it off with two well-taken goal. David Nicholson relished
playing in a more advanced role but couldn’t add any substance
to his hard work. One wonders if the dizzy heights of the pit proved
too much for the reliable midfielder. Craig Snowdon scored late
in the game to keep his scoring form flowing.
James
Tomlinson took up the role of baby-faced assassin. If a comparison
can be made to another sportsman it would be with Manchester United
striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Deadly from the bench the fresh faced
forward scored twice for the second game running. Chris Harrington
worked hard to score later on as Colchester tied up a 16-6 victory.

17 Chelmsford 6
Leisure World 9/01/2007
The
second week of the New Year is normally when the resolutions start
to crumble and vices are fall by the wayside. An evening in the
gym is no longer as inviting as an evening in front of the television,
eating bad food seems more appealing than a bag of rocket salad
and if cigarette sales fall in the first week of January then they
rise drastically in the second week. However, on Tuesday, Colchester
Water Polo team were bucking the trend of broken resolutions away
at Chelmsford, on A dominant 17-6 win meant their assignment of
playing strong and victorious polo was kept with relative simplicity.
The
first quarter was the closest – ending 6-3. Chelmsford took
the lead several times but a fresh and fit Simon Lecomber scored
four goals emphasising Colchester’s attacking ability. Before
Colchester could acquire complete grip on the game goalkeeper Ross
Knevett was called into action to deal with a penalty. A well-taken
penalty was equaled by an impressive save as Knevett’s save.
Colchester took control of the quarter after Simon Nicholson swam
the length of the pool to score. As the quarter ended Craig Snowdon
finished off a good passing move to give Colchester the initiative.
The
captain made changes at the beginning of the second quarter which
instantly paid off. Taher Farghaly’s neat play was enough
to set up James Tomlinson for his first goal. Farghaly continued
to impress in only his second game for the club by scoring himself
later on in the quarter.
Colchester
didn’t allow the home team any opportunity to pull themselves
back into the match thanks to some neat defending from Martin Vinter,
Eddie Corcos and David Nicholson. Nicholson would later have a chance
at scoring but his nerve got the better of him as he missed from
close range.
Although
the game was all but over by the fourth quarter there were still
moments to be savored from the away team. Eddie Corcos’s precision
shot hit the under side of the cross-bar before rippling the goal
net. Chris Harrington and James Tomlinson combined excellently for
Harrington to score with a neat finish and Martin Vinter grabbed
his third goal of the game after a one – two with Snowdon.
Vinter’s goal was to be the last significant moment of the
match as Colchester won 17-6.

14 Ipswich 3
Leirue World 12/12/2006
As
Sir Alex Ferguson will testify, in order for a team to win the league
it is imperative to start the campaign with all guns blazing. Colchester
have followed that recipe for success following up their emphatic
17-2 winter league opener over Southend with a 14-3 win over Ipswich
which showed a clear statement of intent for the winter league crown.
Colchester
lacked a keeper and several players took it in turn to thwart any
Ipswich attacks. The first quarter started at a frantic pace. The
young Ipswich team played to a quick tempo and tried to unsettle
the home team. However, for all Ipswich’s endeavor there was
to be no end product and Colchester quickly took a 2-1 lead. The
second quarter gave Colchester a chance to slow the game down and
take control. Proof was in the pudding in this instance as they
ended the first half 5-1 up.
Colchester
are not a side who will willingly surrender a four goal lead and
they continued to batter Ipswich into submission. Crisp passing
and excellent counter attacking unlocked an Ipswich team struggling
to cope with such a potent offensive force. The 8-1 lead Colchester
took into the final quarter was enough to allowing the home side
to sit back for the final quarter. Instead debutant Taher Farghaly
scored three goals to make a thoroughly impressive first outing
for the team as the game ended 14-3.

17 Southend 2
Leisure World 28/11/2006
Colchester
Water Polo team stormed through their first winter league game with
a resounding 17-2 victory at home to Southend. Only a few absentees
from the squad meant there were ten fully fit players for captain
Simon Nicholson to choose from. Even Richard Horrocks returned after
his nasty accident with a volcanic roast potato.
It
had been four weeks since the last game of the summer league and
Colchester showed signs they were enjoying an Indian summer by winning
the first quarter five nil. Southend were never given a moments
peace on the ball as Colchester kept possession and won the ball
back quickly. The two attackers enjoyed this quarter with Nicholson
and Simon Lecomber scoring all the goals. Lecomber was especially
happy with his four goals.
There
was no time for Southend to attempt a comeback in the second quarter
as Colchester’s hardworking midfield decided to get in amongst
the goals. David Nicholson scored after missing absolute sitter
just moments before. Craig Snowdon then scored after a well-worked
passing move with Simon Lecomber. Snowdon should have assisted Simon
Nicholson for a goal just moments after but a moment of greed meant
he shot wide. The captain scored soon after and only a minute later
Southend scored what can only be described as a consolation goal.
Both the Nicholson brothers scored again before the end of the quarter.
The
tempo of the match slowed down in the second quarter. The game was
done and dusted but Colchester defended well again as Southend ended
another quarter without a goal. Defender Martin Vinter scored from
distance and Stuart White almost got in on the scoring act when
a stylish ‘sling-shot’ forced a good save. Simon Lecomber
and David Nicholson scored the other two goals to finish the quarter
13-1.
The
final quarter was now just a formality as Colchester walked away
with all the points. Simon Nicholson scored two more goals to take
his tally for the game up to six. Eddie Corcos, who was resting
for most of the game due to a neck injury, came on to score great
goal. It was a return to past glories as he sprinted into the opposition
goal area and blasted the ball past the keeper. Corcos wasn’t
the only injured player on the score sheet. Richard Horrocks arm
was on fire for all the right reasons when he blasted in a great
shot from wide on the right. Southend scored the last goal of the
game as the game ended 17-2 and Colchester looked like serious contenders
for the title.

Colchester
15 Southend 4
Leisure World 31/10/2006
A
successful summer officially ended for Colchester last night. Casting
aside the hangovers from Friday night’s celebrations after
winning the cup a strong home team destroyed homeless Southend.
Colchester had a strong side to choose from but with Colchester
missing a goalkeeper they were forced to use several make shift
replacements.
The
first quarter was heading for a stalemate, the first 8 minutes fairly
evenly balanced as Colchester defended well. The Southend keeper
was in inspired form using any part of his body to keep out the
Colchester team. One and a half minutes remained on the clock when
defender Martin Vinter scored from a man up to give Colchester the
lead. As the first period came to the end James Tomlinson scored
from a second man up to give Colchester a two-goal lead.
The
second quarter began with a keeper change as Richard Horrocks swapped
with Craig Snowdon. The two late goals had given Colchester a lift
and they soon attacked with their usual flair and effectiveness.
Captain Simon Nicholson and Simon Lecomber scored two quick goals
as Southend struggled to get to grips with the home side. Southend
pulled a goal back but it would be the end of the quarter before
they scored again. Nicholson scored another two, as did Lecomber.
Chris Harrington scored after a well-worked move to make it 9-2
at half time.
The
third quarter saw Colchester’s two main attackers Lecomber
and Nicholson out the water and the lack of firepower was obvious.
Eddie Corcos struggled alone up front but got no joy as Southend
tightened up at the back. The quarter ended 1-1 after Martin Vinter’s
goal was cancelled out by a late Southend effort.
Colchester
took a 10-3 lead into the last quarter and hoped to finish strongly.
Simon Nicholson scored early on, with a goal that would take him
to top of the goal-scoring table. A minute later Corcos was rewarded
for his hard work in the previous quarter with a goal. As Southend
scored their last of the game the outcome was certain. However the
outcome of the Colchester scoring competition was not so certain.
Snowdon raced out his own half to score a goal that put him joint
top with Nicholson. Moments later Snowdon scored again from close
range putting him top of the chart. In the dying seconds of the
game Colchester raced forward and Snowdon smashed a shot off the
bar. Catching the rebound the ball found its way to Simon Nicholson
who scored. That goal wrapped up the 15-4 result and gave Simon
Nicholson the crown of goal king.
