biography

The band was formed in January 1998 by University College London (UCL) students Chris Martin (b. 2 Mar 1977, Exeter; vocals), Jon Buckland (11 Sep 1977, London; guitar), Guy Berryman (12 Apr 1978, Kirkcaldy; bass) and Will Champion (31 Jul 1978, Southampton; drums).

20th - Performed "Clocks" live at the Brit Awards. Also picked up 2 awards for Best British Band and Best Album (For a Rush Of Blood To The Head)
january
28th - Performed live in Houston, Texas [ Verizon Wireless Theatre ].
27th - Performed live in New Orleans, Louisiana [ Saenger Theatre ].
26th - Performed "Clocks" live on the 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' show in Los Angeles [ Hollywood Blvd ]. It was performed in front of the Kodak Theatre
25th - Performed live in Charlotte, North Carolina [ Grady Cole ].
24th - Performed live in Birmingham, Alabama [ BJCC Concert Hall ].
22nd - Performed live in Miami, Florida [ University of Miami Convocation Center ].

6th - Coldplay perform 4 live songs on the BBC2 show Later with Jools Holland.

17th - The Scientist goes straight into the UK Charts at number 10.
11th - The Scientist is released in the UK. It is the second single to come from 'A Rush...', following the success of In My Place in August.

4th - Coldplay kicked off their UK tour in Glasgow tonite. They will be supported by Idlewild. Not exactly relevant, but I shall be seeing them live for the first time tomorrow night (5th October, Newcastle Arena)!!!

september
28th - Chris begins shooting the video for The Scientist, the next single to be released from 'A Rush...'.
16th - Gig in Baltimore, Maryland at the Pier Six Concert Pavillion.
02nd - A Rush Of Blood To The Head enters the US Billboard 200 at No.5! 01st - A Rush Of Blood To The Head goes straight into the UK album chart at No.1!

26th - A Rush of Blood to the Head is released in the UK, followed by it's US release a day later.
12th - Gig in New York City at the Bowery Room.
11th - In My Place charts at Number 2 in the Official UK Charts. If it hadn't been for Popstars reject Darius Danesh, Coldplay would have had their first Number 1. There is no justice in the world.
6th - 2 gigs in Boston, Massachusetts. 1 for WBCN, and the other at the Paradise Club.
5th - In My Place, the first single from Coldplay's new album, is released.

Coldplay won 3 NME Carling Awards for Best New Artist, Best Single, and Session of the Year (for a live appearance on a BBC show).

The first Parlophone release 'The Blue Room' E.P, 5000 limited edition CD/12' with video.
The lead track, 'Bigger Stronger' started picking up plays on Radio One when Steve Lamaq and Jo Whiley pronounced themselves Coldplay fans.
Nationwide Tour co-headlining with Bellatrix.
At the end of 1999, Coldplay found themselves being touted by the music press as a band to watch in 2000. NME particulary displayed their faith in them by putting them on the bill for the January NME Premiere tour.

'Safety' got Coldplay a gig in a cuban cafe as part of the Unsigned Bands' Festival 'In the City' in Manchester. In the audience was a talent scout who tipped off Dan Keeling of Parlophone records to keep an eye on them. Another gig at the Falcon in Camden was written up by NME journalist Simon Williams who wrote a glowing review and offered them the chance to record the single 'Brothers and Sisters' for his Fierce Panda label.

Chris' old school mate Phil became their manager and financed Coldplay's first recording and release of self-financed 'Safety EP' on 500 copies, limited CD.

Coldplay form, having met at University College London back in 1996.
The band got together after Chris and Jon started jamming and writing songs together.
Soon after, Guy came long to add some bass. The current line-up was completed when Will decided to play drums for them, despite never having played before.
The name COLDPLAY was nicked off their mate Tim before he could use it for his band.
First gig, under guise of 'Starfish' at Camden Laurel Tree (now closed).
First coldplay internet site established by Claire Smith (later developed into coldplay.org, which is now part of .com)
COLDPLAY became best mates who all live and breathe to make beautiful music. From their very first session together, they realised they had the chemistry to acheive greatness.
