CERTIFICATE(S) OF NON-IMPEDIMENT
This is something you arrange at your local registrar of births, deaths and marriages (local council dept.). Basically it's where they put your names and intention to marry on a notice board for three weeks to allow anyone to "speak now or forever hold their peace". This certificate is only valid for three months but it's the first step before legalisation or translation for obvious reasons. Now it all gets a bit muddy and you might like to err on the side of caution as we did. The holiday people told us we needed one of these between us - the man in the registry office insisted we needed one each. Since his office was about the size of a football pitch he was obviously not the tea boy so we were inclined to take his word for it and opted for one each. Next grey area - on the bits of paper when you get them there will be two dates  - the date you applied and the date it was issued (three weeks and a day later). Mixed answers from various sources as to which date the three month expiry was linked to caused us to ensure that both dates were within three months of the wedding day. The best bit of all this is that when I collected them I was given two identical documents. In my mind one would have my name first then the mighty and wise one's and vice versa - nope, absolutely identical.  (£25 per document + £12 legalisation + £40 translation = £77 possibly wasted which is a lot of Amstel (beer) tokens but then again once you're in Greece arguing with an official you can't pop home for another one - as pointed out by the one who must be obeyed). Current cost - £25 each plus in our case bad attitude from the registrar who obviously felt we should prefer stepping out of his registry office into probable pissing rain on the A6 (a very busy road in Stockport).   Timeframe - three weeks and a day.   Payment by cheque.
