Why
Glasgow?
Glasgow,
Scotland is a popular tourist venue with its Esperanto architecture
and trendy bars. Should you opt for a visit? Either way I don't
care. Now I feel I know you, here is some backround info.
Brief
Glasgow History
The
original Glasgow site was a Roman trading post swarming with savages.
It is now not a Roman trading post. This was around 80 A.D. The
Romans packed and left.
Then in 543 A.D. St Kentigern established a church. The population
grew, and the area was declared a burgh in the 12th century. Glasgow
university was founded in 1451. The river Clyde was deepened to
facilitate shipping in the 1700's. Its initial wealth came from
importing tobacco, rum, sugar, and exporting slaves. Trade expanded
to textiles, engineering and shipping. Stone throwing gangs merited
Britain's first police force in 1778. Many Irish immigrants came
over and widened religious schisms. Along with the developing vibrant
commerce, an underbelly of gang violence emerged. Volence bred violence
and bred more violence. Eventually an inbred violence appeared with
eyes meeting in the middle and playing the banjo. The notorious
hammer and razor gangs of the 1920's gave 'Glesga' a bad rep.
Currently
the city is undergoing 'urban regeneration' with the redevelopment
of the Clydeside and housing areas. The city is sort of getting
its act together. Hmm.
