1) The Charlton Standard Catalogue Of Wade Whimsical Collectables - MilleniumEdition.
I used the third edition extensively and bought the fourth edition as soon as it came out, personally from Pat who kindly signed my copy. The book is split into sections covering Wade models (from the 30's on and including "First Whimsies" 1971-80), Wade collectors fair and event figures, collectors club pieces, privately commissioned models (Tom Smiths Crackers, Red Rose Tea etc)and a very good index. Each model mentioned is shown in a black and white photograph and its value is given in £sterling, $USA and $Canadian.
"The Canadian Red Rose Tea promotion was so successful that
it was extended to the United States in 1983. Red Rose estimates that over
200 million Wade models have been distributed in packets of Red Rose Tea
in the U.S.A. and in Canada during its promotions.
In many states figurine promotions overlap, with some model series still being offered in one area whilst a new series is offered in another."
If you are a Wade collector, or more importantly a Whimsie collector, then this book is a must as it is seen as being the Whimsie collector's bible. Go straight to one of the following links

2) The World Of Wade Book 1
Not actually called book 1 as, when published, book 2 was not envisaged. This is a large format (take 2 paperbacks, side by side and view the result in portrait) volume of 188 pages. Althoughly mainly in black and white, the main draw to this book is its 38 pages in excellent glossy colour, crammed with detailed photographs of Wade goodies. Here you can see colour differences in vases, here you can see colour plates of whimsies that have, in other books, been described with accompanying black and white photos. After the usual and obligatory introduction, history and list of backstamps, there are sections on;-
Figurines, Flowers and Animals. Each with a b&w photo.
Whimsies 1953-59 and 1971-84. Showing diagrams of variations (rabbits ears, backstamps etc.) and going up to the Connoisseur's collection of 1978-82. The colour plates cover Disney miniatures, dogs & puppies, cat & puppy dishes, nursery favourites, happy families, Whoppas, horse sets, Whimsie Land, Whimsies 1953-59 (48 items), Whimsies 1971-84 (60 items). Red Rose tea and miscellaneous (74 items), party cracker (44 items), Whimtrays.
Premiums And Promotional Items. Including some of the above whimsies.
Whimsy On Why Village Sets 1980 to present. The colour plates show 38 items along with 10 village stores.
Decorative Pitchers. Including 39 in the colour plates.
Tableware.
Tankards And Souveniers. Every Wade show has these Vintage Car sets! + others. 44 tankards shown in colour along with 18 small souveniers.
Royal Commemoratives. Bells, cups, plates, candlesticks.
Wade Ireland. A subject in itself. Irish character figures along with Bally Whim village are shown in colour.
Wade PDM. (production, design, marketting) Brewerania at its best, water jugs, ash trays, bells, spirit flasks, guinness figures, ships decanters.
Miscellaneous.
The index is not the most comprehensive but the fact that you have to spend more time thumbing through the book is a bonus rather than a chore.
Should you be a Wade nut then this book should be on your coffee table (with a Wade pdm 'Bass' ashtray) so follow the link to the secure site to look at prices etc by choosing one of the following

3) The World Of Wade Book 2
The same
size and format as World Of Wade 1 but this time with an expanded 252 pages
and a glorious 64 pages in glossy colour. This book is not an update but
a welcome addition for the serious collector. Of course there is an update
- to the introduction, history and backstamps - as information came flooding
in after the release of book 1. There is also the addition of a background
to the designer/modellers, including my favourite Bill Harper who later went
to Royal Doulton. The chapter layout has changed from Book 1 but basically
carries through the items already listed above. If you have purchased Book
1 and loved it then there will come a time when this volume will be 'needed'.

4) Wade Price Trends
Again the same large format as the books above, this will look good on the bookshelves next to the other two. World of Wade Books 1&2 are not cheap. They are not the sort of books that you could throw away when the valuation of items was redundant. For this reason they contain no valuations and that is left to this volume 'Wade Price Trends'. Do Not buy this book as a stand alone, there is not much use in you knowing that "Item 13 small squirrel, US$95, UK£60, see also no 149 pg 54 of WofW2" unless you have got Wof W 1&2 to refer back to. If you have World Of Wade 1&2 then this is the obvious extension.
This volume has 160 pages and the central glossy colour photos cover 24 pages - 362 items. The price guide is in three sections. Section 1 covers the colour photographs in this volume while sections 2&3 take their references from the catalogue numbers in World Of Wade 1&2.

5) The Charlton Standard Catalogue Of Wade Volume 1 General Issues, 2nd Edition
A
browsing book as well as a reference book. Highly populated with black and
white photos, good descriptions of pieces, size of piece and value in US$,
Can$, and UK£. The sort of book that you look through the night before
attending a boot sale or jumble sale - well we can all dream can't we.
408 pages in black and white, liberally sprinkled with black and white photos, usually either one or two per page. Sections on Advertising And Commissioned Products (1-68), Animals (69-110), Birds (111-132), Commemerative Ware (133-156), Figures (157-192), Jugs Steins & Tankards (193-228), Liquor Products (229-380), Money Boxes (381-384) and Shaving Mugs (385-386). The 16 page index is comprehensive and cross references most items.
After the first couple of pages showing the usual different types of backstamp etc., Pat gets right down to the first section which is 'Advertising And Commissioned Products.' We are taken from Addis, Barratt Homes and Benson & Hedges, through to Windsor & Newton Inks and The Yorkshire Insurance Company. The section covers items as diverse as mugs to a razorback pig. Talking of pigs, this is the section where you will find the famous National Westminster Bank 'pig family'.
Animal Figures split into cellulose models, high gloss models, Flaxman Ware and series & sets. This section covers animals from 1930-1991. Includes Spaniels and alsations that you have seen on grandparents mantle shelves. the animals are in alphabetical order for easy reference.
Birds, from 1930 to present split into high gloss models and series & sets. The oft seen (at shows) budgerigars, along with ducks etc.
Commemerative Ware. From the silver jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary (1935) up to the 90th birthday of the Queen Mother (1990) and consisting of plates, jugs, whisky decanters etc.
Figures, split into cellulose figures, high gloss figures and series & sets. I love Wade but always think that Royal Doulton do figures better. For those that collect or are interested this section covers Wade figures from 1927 to The Sophisticated Ladies of 1991.
Jugs, Steins and Tankards, split into character jugs, beer steins, toby jugs, tankards and Ulster Ware tankards. All sorts represented including the often seen Veteran Car Series of 1956-1967.
Liquor Products. Decanters, whisky (water) jugs and ash trays made for breweries/distilleries. The section is alphabetical by brewery/distillery from Abbot's choice Scotch Whisky to Worthington Beer.
Money Boxes. A very short section - some are to be found in other sections - see 'index' below.
Shaving Mugs. one page only of 3 photos describing 5 items.
Index. A quick test of the index showed that 'ashtray' has 123 entries scattered throughout the book and 'money boxes' has 23 entries throughout the book so is not limited to the short section described above.
For the reasons stated at the beginning of this review, I use this book extensively and thoroughly recommend it. To delve further into price, availability, secure sites and gift wrapping, follow one of the links
