“An Opera House has operated in Emmet Place for over 140 years, save for the 10 years of closure following the fire of 1955. After that traumatic event, a generation of Cork people worked selflessly to restore the Opera House in 1965, personifying the involvement and sense of indentity which has kept this institution at the heart of the cultural life of Cork City and County. Survival over the years has meant constant change and the need for re-invention. In this respect, the efforts of the current Board of Directors have been rewarded with a regeneration of audiences across all genres of artistic endeavour, and a fourfold increase in turnover.”
