| A Visitors Guide To St Mary the Virgin, Westwood, Wiltshire
|
The village of Westwood is about 1½ miles from Bradford on Avon on the
southern most tip of the Cotswolds. The parish Church of Saint Mary the
Virgin and parts of the present building date from the 14th century
although much of the church has been restored over the centuries. The
design is a good example of the English Gothic style of
perpendicular
architecture. The chancel is the oldest part of the church and was rebuilt
in the mid 1800's and the Nave rebuilt in the late 1700's.
The tower is the crowning glory and is one of the group of churches
with similar towers which could be the work of the same craftsmen.
Examples of this type of tower can be seen at Yatton Keynell, Nettleton,
West Kington and Southbroom and others can be found in the nearby county
of Somerset. |
