Some of the finest gardens in England can be found in the Cotswolds and some are designed by the well known designers like Harold Peto or Rosemary Verey.  There are small cottage gardens along with the famous Hidcote Manor and Abbey House Gardens and the two fine arboretums at Westonbirt and Batsford. Some of them are open all year and others are open at certain times so its always best to contact the property before any visit.

Abbey House Gardens

The gardens are owned privately by Ian and Barbara Pollard. The property is located in the ancient Benedictine Abbey at Malmesbury and the gardens have featured several times on television including Gardeners World. Open March-October.

Batsford Arboretum

A mini -Westonbirt of only 55 acres but a wonderful alternative to it's bigger neighbour. A combined admission ticket is available to the interesting Cotswold Falconry Centre which adds up to a great day out at anytime of the year. Open all year.

Bourton House Garden

The formal herbaceous gardens surround an 18th century manor house (not open). Designed with borders of exotic and herbaceous plants, topiary, shade house and pots. Open May-October (limited opening times).

Cerney House Garden

Described as a romantic garden located in the small village of North Cerney. The gardens consist of a working kitchen garden, herbaceous borders, plant collections and herb garden. Open April-July (limited opening times).

Hidcote Manor Gardens

Hidcote Manor owned by the National Trust and one of England's best Arts and Crafts gardens. Designed by Major Lawrence Johnson, the gardens are famous for its division into outdoor rooms. Open March-November.

Kiftsgate Court Gardens

This privately owned garden is close to Hidcote Manor so it is easy to combine a visit to both gardens, although Kiftsgate Court is only open certain days of the week. The garden gave its name to the largest rose in England Rosa filipes Kiftsgate. Open April-September.

Mill Dene Garden

The 2½ acre cottage garden is privately owned and has been designed by the owner. The layout includes a mill pond, stream, grotto, rose garden, pottager and fruit garden. Open April-October (limited opening times).

Misarden Park Gardens

At the head of the Golden Valley, visitors can be rewarded with spring flowers, shrubs, topiary and herbaceous borders. Open April-September.

Painswick Rococo Garden

A restored Rococo period garden. Restoration began in 1984 and is in the hands of the Painswick Rococo Garden Trust and is famed for it's spectacular display of snowdrops in early spring. Open January-November.

The Peto Garden at Iford Manor

Home of the Edwardian landscape designer, Harold Peto, the gardens are of Italian style which is characterised by the pools, terraces, sculpture and planting. Open May-October (limited opening times).

Prior Park Landscape Gardens

Designed by Ralph Allen this National Trust property has wonderful views across the city of Bath. restoration is continuing on the gardens. Open all year (limited opening times).

The house and gardens are a good example of the Cotswolds Arts and Crafts Movement. The garden consists of a series of outdoor rooms with herbaceous borders, topiary, kitchen garden and more. the property is privately owned. Open May-August (limited opening times)

Stanway Water Gardens

Restored 18th century water gardens. Stanway lies beneath the Cotswold escarpment and is a beautiful village. The gardens include a grand formal canal and a 70 foot fountain, flower meadows and a walled garden. Open July-August (limited opening times).

Trull House Gardens

The eight acre gardens were designed at the beginning of the last century and comprises of a sunken lily pond, wild garden, walled gardens and mature shrubs and larger trees. Privately owned the gardens are set in the rural Cotswold landscape near Tetbury. Open Easter-September (limited opening times)

Westonbirt Arboretum

Westonbirt, The National Arboretum is a place for all seasons. Try to visit the 600 acre site at least once every season. Spring-alive with vibrant colours of magnolias, rhododendrons and azaleas, Summer- tranquility of the leafy glades, dappled by the summer sun. Autumn-the abundance of coloured Acers, Winter- magical landscapes of dogwoods, winter cherries  and evergreens. Awe-inspiring. Open all year.

Westonbirt House was built by Robert Holford who also designed the outstanding Westonbirt Arboretum. The gardens have rarely been seen by the general public, but that has now been put right. Open contact Westonbirt School.
