About the Lostwithiel Quilt

I have always found the Lostwithiel Campaign much more interesting than any battles I have read about which happened during the Civil War. Thousands of Men were trapped in this small area of Cornwall and left to find their own way back home.

In making this quilt my first job was to work out a design, and then to find the fabrics which would be suitable, especially in sewing the armour and leather. I studied the countryside around Lostwithiel in August, the time of the battle, and was surprised to find how much yellow and brown there was, and not green.

Because I didn't want the quilt to have straight sides, I decided to put figures either side, and the illustrations of the musketeer and pikeman were taken from a leaflet produced by The Times newspaper to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the outbreak of the Civil War.

The characters were first embroidered and applied onto a backing fabric, then mounted on a piece of cardboard, and a backing attached to the figure. They are removable for ease of storage and the whole quilt was made in eight pieces and subsequently assembled.

The illustrations of Fowey, Golant, Polruan, Hall, St. Veep and St. Winnow were taken from John Norden's book.

The embroidery stitches used were herringbone, blanket, stem, lazy daisy and seed stitch. I started the quilt in 1995 and finished it in May 2000, although this was not the only piece of work that I was doing.

The quilt was exhibited at the Camborne School of Mines in April 2001 and Bethel Chapel in September 2001. For more information on the Lostwithiel campaign I would recommend:
