Still Life with Metronome
Georges Braque - 1910, Oil on canvas 81.5 x 53.5 cm
'Still Life with Metronome' would be one of many still life paintings produced by Braque In the many years to follow. Braque had a massive interested in music from playing the violin and taking flute lessons and showed this interest by displaying and painting musical instruments in the still lives. This still life is painted in yellows, ochre's and browns, which is quite close to a state of monochromatism.
The composition is made up of flattened planes that are juxtaposed so that they are separate and recognizable from each other. The forms are not split as much as previous paintings like 'Piano and Mandolin' and 'Violin and Palette' but are spread and separated so that the objects are broken, developed and extended so that they produce new shapes.
