Women Reading
Georges Braque - 1911, Oil on canvas 130 x 81 cm.
'Women Reading' was painted during Braque's stay in Ceret, In The South of France from August 1911 to January 1912, It was finished in November 1911.
The painting is more complex and difficult to read compared to previous works. The women is not immediately recognizable, the only indication I have of the human figure are the few curves and what seems to be hair at the top of the painting. The Women is sitting on a chair and if she is reading? Then I would guess that the newspaper or book would be the light blue and greens below her head.
The chair stands out clearly in the bottom left-hand side as, the armrest and more interesting is the possibilities of the background. From the top right-hand side down to the middle seem to be books, two displayed vertically and two offset slanting to the right possibly on a bookshelf?
