Mont Sainte-Victoire
Paul Cezanne - 1902-1906 - Oil on canvas 65 x 81 cm
Nature was not the only foundation of art, structure also played a big part in Paul Cezanne's work. Therefore, in the 1880's Cezanne started to apply the paint in careful parallel strokes so as to give the paintings a sense of order. After about 1885, these dabs of colour became so inclusive to the surface, and started to give the painting an abstract quality. The painting shown here consequently has the appearance of a mosaic, but in contrast to Pointillism, the discrete touches of colour refuse to merge. This late work and many others influenced Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and set the path for Cubism to begin.
