Canberra WK129 Was on a top secret 240-mile radar test from RAF Pershore,Worcestershire,on the afternoon of Monday 9th December 1957, when it disappeared from track. The aircraft, unbeknown to Pershore, had crashed on a 3,195ft peak in the Welsh mountains of Snowdonia, both the crew of two had perished and a wide spread search was executed throughout North Wales.
Pilot: F/Lt William Albert Bell. (K) Navigator: F/Lt Kenneth Charles Frederick Shelley.(K)
At an inquiry into the accident, the cause was deemed undetermained, but a contributory factor may have been icing.
The Canberra crashed in an area once daubed by the men of the RAF MRT at Llandwrog during the war, `The Graveyard` because so many aircraft had crashed in that area where cloud often shrouds the mountain tops.
