Beaufort N1180 - S.Scotland

BEAUFORT N1180  - TOR MHOR, MULL OF KINTYRE.

Bristol Beaufort N1180 had taken off from No 1 TTU (Torpedo
Training Unit) at RAF Abbotsinch, Scotland, when it was reported
missing from a routine night training flight on 2nd Sept 1942.

Little is known of the actual flight but wreckage was eventually
found on Tor Mhor near the lighthouse road on Mull of Kintyre,
sadly all four crew had been killed.

According to the ORB for  Wednesday 2nd Sept 1942,"Beaufort
`S` from Abbotsinch was flying on a Night Navigation Exercise
and flew off course". Another aircraft from the same unit L9803
also flew off course and was found crashed on the Isle of Mull,
reasons given in this case were "Navigation error" But " During
the night there was a high increase in wind velocity with  an
alteration in direction" which could have contributed.
